Effective March 1, 2010, Google will begin phasing out support for Internet Explorer 6 in Google Docs and Google Sites.
Thank you, Google! If you have ever been part of a website project, then you have felt the pain of dealing with IE6. Since its' birth in 2001, IE6 has caused nothing but nightmares for the web development community. As a consultant, as a designer, as a developer, there is nothing I despise more day-to-day than IE6. Strong words, yes, but very true. IE6 causes more headaches, loss of hair (note: my bald head) and wasted time than any part of the entire web development process.
So, to celebrate (oops... i mean morn) IE6's death, join us for a toast. Inspired by a design firm in Denver, who is literally holding a funeral (OK, it's a party) for the death of IE6, come join Shane and I for a drink at one of our favorite watering holes, Capitol Lounge, on Thursday, March 4th at 6:00pm.
Capitol Lounge is located at 231 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, Washington, DC. Just jump off the metro at Capitol South!
Leave a comment below if you can make it! And if you can't make it, leave a comment below anyway and tell us your fondest memories of IE6 - Shane and I will drink one for you.
As Google writes:
“Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer) 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from March 1 key functionality within these products — as well as new Docs and Sites features — won’t work properly in older browsers.”
For a more in-depth look at why IE6 is a problematic browser, take a look at this post from Mashable and then read up on a few more key reasons on why IE6 must die.
We bid you ado, sweet Internet Explorer 6. But with IE8, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera waiting for us in the wings, we won’t mourn for too long. Project BIG fish is joining Google and will begin its phase out of IE6 support effective March 1st as well... we have been waiting so long to say that!
